After the earthquake in Mexico that killed 343 people, a statue of the Virgin Mary began to cry.

According to locals, the catastrophic earthquake that struck Mexico last week has prompted a statue of the Virgin Mary to come to life.

  • Locals in the southern community of Cupilco believe the statue has been sobbing real tears since the earthquake that killed at least 343 people.
  • However, parish priest Enrico Lazzaroni, an Italian, had instructed his followers to remain silent.
  • Since the earthquake, word has spread, and some politicians have travelled to Cupilco to seek solace following the loss of life.
  • 'With what has transpired in Mexico: earthquakes, hurricanes, child fatalities, God is asking us to make us alert,' says the Virgin.
  • However, some say it is only a psychological ploy as Mexico continues to mourn following the earthquake.

  • On a recent Sunday, the Rev. Adrián Vázquez led parishioners seated in pews and plastic chairs in celebrating 10 a.m. Mass under a white tent on the street outside Our Lady of the Angels, flanked by piles of wreckage from the sanctuary left there by a catastrophic earthquake nearly five years ago.
  • The still-broken church stood to the left, with large fissures in the walls and a half-collapsed dome supported by scaffolding and a leaning column. Behind the priest was a wax painting of the Virgin Mary, a reproduction of the one on the wall inside the building that was mostly hidden from view by the faithful.
  • But Vázquez's joy was so palpable that it couldn't be concealed by his pandemic facemask when he delivered the speech.

  • According to a book about the church written about a century ago, a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin came in the area in 1580 floating on floodwaters and wound up in the mud on the property of an Indigenous cacique, or chief, known as Izayoque. The artwork illustrates the Catholic belief that Mary, Jesus' mother, ascended to heaven in both body and soul.
  • "Against that background of darkness and desolation, the picture of Our Lady of the Angels appears in full brightness as a rainbow in the midst of the storm," Berruecos wrote, "in the midst of the floods, with all the evil they wrought."
  • "It generated a huge roar, almost like an explosion," González recalled. "When we saw the dome, we all burst into tears..." Nobody died, which was a miracle."
  • The church had been devastated by the quake five days before, which killed about 360 people, toppled scores of buildings, and left many more damaged and ready for demolition.

Mexican residents believe their Virgin Mary statue has begun to cry and move her hands since the country's terrible earthquake.

Following rumours of the weeping monument, hundreds of Christians gathered to the village of Cupilco in the southern Mexican state of Tabasco.
